The truth is that most people are not well versed with the working of Google PageRank and search results ranking. So let’s get an insight into what they really are and how effective they are for online businesses.

Search results ranking
If you are looking for a particular product, service or information, you will type a relevant word on the Google search bar and it will bring up results. Now each of the web pages displayed will have a particular search engine ranking. The question is how do search engines rank websites by determining their relevancy?

Basically, search engines follow certain rules also known as algorithm. Different search engines use different algorithm and that is something quite difficult to determine. One of the general rules is location & frequency of keywords. Considered as an important aspect of any search engine ranking algorithm, location of keywords deals with where all the keywords appear on your webpage. Most top search engines will search for keywords at the top of your web page like in the headline, title, or first paragraph. On the basis of the result, search engines will designate the relevancy. Frequency on the other hand involves analyzing how often relevant keywords appear on your web page. The higher the frequency, the better the results.

Google PageRank
Google PageRank is considered as one of the most powerful and effective forms of online media processes. The Google Toolbar has a PageRank feature, which displays the PageRank of visited pages. PageRank is normally a whole number anywhere from 0 to 10. Popular websites will get 10 while the most unpopular will have a PageRank of 0 or 1. Even if you have not enabled SEO, the PageRank will show as 0 or 1. Hence, working on your search engine optimization strategy to increase Google PageRank is very important as it is a growth enabler over the internet.

Since PageRank works on an algorithm, here is how it is calculated:

PR(A) = (1-d) + d(PR(t1)/C(t1) + ... + PR(tn)/C(tn))

This is the algorithm that is used for calculating the PageRank for a particular webpage. This is based on all the inbound links as well as outbound links. In the above equation 't1 and tn' denote various pages linked to your webpage A while 'C' determines the number of outbound links from page ’A’ and 'd' is the damping factor, which by default is 0.85.
